Abel, Frederick Augustus (1827-1902)

British scientist and inventor who developed explosives. As a chemist to the War Department, he improved gun-cotton manufacture by showing that it is essential to remove all traces of the acids used in the process. He was joint inventor with James Dewar of cordite and also invented the Abel close-test instrument for determining the flash point (ignition temperature) of petroleum. Baronet 1893.
