Abeokuta

Agricultural trade centre and capital of Ogun State, Nigeria, on the Ogun River, 103 km/64 mi north of Lagos; population (2007 est) 631,000. Products include rice, yams, cassava, maize, palm oil, cotton, fruits, and vegetables. Abeokuta was founded in the early 1800s as a settlement for freed Yoruba slaves. It grew rapidly to become the capital of the Egba kingdom. Railway links to Lagos and Kano were completed in 1912, and the town was incorporated into the British colony of Nigeria in 1914. The Federal University of Agriculture is here.
