Abingdon

Town in Harford County, northeast Maryland, USA; population (2000) 12,700. It is situated 34 km/21 mi east-northeast of Baltimore, near the Bush River and the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The settlement was founded in 1779 by William Paca, one of the cosignatories of the Declaration of Independence. Cokesbury College, the first Methodist college in the Western hemisphere, was based here from 1785–95.

Abingdon

Town and administrative headquarters of Washington County in southwest Virginia, USA; population (1990) 7,000. It is located 24 km/15 mi northeast of Bristol, near the Tennessee state boundary line, and is situated in a farming and dairying region of the Great Appalachian Valley. Abingdon is a trade centre for tobacco and grain growers. Black's Fort (1776) was attacked by Indians in the 18th century, and the town was burned by Union troops in 1864. The town is home to the Barter Theater (1933) and Highlands Community College (1967).
