Abomey

Town and centre of the palm oil industry in Benin; population (2002) 59,700. It is connected by rail to Cotonou 100 km/62 mi to the south. Abomey was founded in the 17th century and was the capital of the Yoruba state of Dahomey, which flourished in the 17th–19th centuries, until its capture by the French in 1893. The town is a tourist centre.

Abomey had a mud-built defence wall 10 km/6 mi in circumference, which contained the royal palaces of 11 of the 12 kings of the former Kingdom of Abomey (1625–1900); two of these palaces remain.
