absolute dating

The determination of age in calendar years by reference to a fixed timescale. It usually incorporates a measure of uncertainty, expressed as a standard deviation. Methods include radiocarbon dating, accelerator mass spectrometry, thermoluminescence, potassium-argon dating, electron spin resonance, fission-track dating, archaeomagnetic dating, dendrochronology (tree-ring dating), varve analysis, dating by amino acid racemization, and obsidian hydration rim dating.
