sound absorption

In acoustics, the conversion of sound energy to heat energy when sound waves strike a surface. The process reduces the amplitude of each reflected sound wave (echo) and thus the degree to which reverberation takes place. Materials with good sound-absorbing properties are often fitted on walls and ceilings in buildings such as offices, factories, and concert halls in order to reduce or control sound levels.
