Abuja

Capital of Nigeria (formally designated as such 1982, although not officially recognized until 1992); population of Federal Capital District (1991 est) 378,700; population of city alone (1991 est) 107,100. Shaped like a crescent, the city was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange; building of the city began in 1976 as a replacement for Lagos, and is still largely under construction. The city obtains electricity from the Shiroro Dam on the River Niger; the main functions of the city are administrative, with only light industry.

Abuja is linked to the state capitals of Nigeria by highways and the city is served by an international airport. The University of Abuja dates from 1988.
