Abwehr

Intelligence and counterespionage service of the German High Command 1933-45. It was commanded by Admiral Canaris 1935-44, when its duties were taken over by the SS under Himmler.

German intelligence, the Abwehr, remained efficient and reasonable (and ready to deal discreetly with the Allies) while the wickedness was perpetrated by Schellenburg's SS intelligence division, the Sicherheitsdienst.
