Abyngdon, Henry

Abyngdon, Henry (c. 1418–c. 1497)

English musician. He was appointed to the service of the Duke of Gloucester in 1445, and was made succentor of Wells Cathedral in 1447. In 1456 he was made Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal, and in 1463 he became the first person to receive a music degree at Cambridge (Bachelor of Music). He was made master of St Catherine's Hospital, Bristol, in 1478, in which year Gilbert Banastre succeeded him at the Chapel Royal.
