Acajutla

Seaport in El Salvador, 85 km/53 mi southwest of San Salvador; population (1993) 17,200. It is the largest port in the country. The main export commodity is coffee; the port handles about 40% of El Salvador's coffee exports. There are oil refineries, a cement factory, and a fertilizer plant here. Acajutla is a popular seaside resort in the summer, particularly for surfing.

Acajutla was modernized in the 1980s to enable vessels to berth instead of loading and unloading by lighters (large open boats). Investment has been directed at the port, leaving the town centre in a neglected state. Beach access is restricted because of the port.
