Acanthodii

The spiny sharks, one of the five classes of fishes, now extinct. They were about 10–30 cm/4–12 in long, and possessed features of both the sharks, which have a cartilaginous skeleton, and the bony fish, which have a bony skeleton. They are the earliest known jawed vertebrate animals.

Before this discovery, most scientists believed that the braincases of Acanthodians resembled those of bony fish, and were thus related to this type of animal.
Vertebrates described in earlier studies include psammosteids (Obruchev & Mark-Kurik 1965; Mark-Kurik 1968, 1995), placoderms (Karatajute-Talimaa 1963), acanthodians (Valiukevicius 1998), and sarcopterygians (Vorobyeva 1977).
