Acerra

Town in Campania region, southern Italy, 14 km/9 mi northeast of Naples; population (1991 est) 33,200. It was once a Roman city, burnt by the Carthaginian general Hannibal in 216 BC. The cathedral was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1788. There are sulphur springs nearby.
