Achaea (or Achaia)

In ancient Greece, an area of the northern Peloponnese. The Achaeans were the predominant society during the Mycenaean period and are said by Homer to have taken part in the siege of Troy. The larger Roman province of Achaea was created after the defeat of the Achaean League in 146 BC; it included all mainland Greece south of a line drawn from the Ambracian to the Maliac Gulf.
