Pope from 1922. He signed the concordat (papal agreement) with Mussolini in 1929.

Dominated during the interwar period by a chronically ill but tempestuous Achille Ratti, or Pius XI, who presided in imperial splendor, the Vatican developed policies at a snail's pace, framing priorities defined by eternity, rather than the distractions of the temporal world.
He owed his release to the vigorous intervention of Archbishop Achille Ratti, Apostolic Nuncio in Warsaw and later Pope Pius XI.
As papal envoy to Warsaw, Achille Ratti, three years before becoming Pope Pius XI, reported to the Vatican secretary of state that "the most evil" influence in Poland was the Jews.
