Achron, Joseph (1886-1943)

Polish-born US violinist and composer. He studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory 1898-1904 with Liadov and Auer, and taught at the Kharkov Conservatory 1913-16. In 1925 he immigrated to the USA. He worked in Hollywood from 1934, after teaching at the Westchester Conservatory. His later music was influenced by atonality and includes three violin concertos (1925, 1933, and 1937, the third of which was commissioned by Heifetz), statuettes for piano (1929), Sabbath (1930) and a piano concerto (1941).
