acid-base balance

Essential balance between the amount of carbonic acid and bicarbonate (an alkali) in the blood. It must be kept constant so that the hydrogen ion concentration in the blood plasma is in turn kept constant. Any deviation in acid-base balance can have profound effects on physiological functioning.
