Acklins Island

Island in the Bahamas, lying southeast of Crooked Island, in the West Indies; area 497 sq km/192 sq mi. Farming and fishing are the main occupations, and the principal exports are aloe vera, for use in skin preparations, and cascarilla bark, used in the production of Campari. The main settlement on the island is Spring Point. The island's bizarre rock formations, long beaches, and varied plant and animal life, have all contributed to its growing tourist industry.

Castle Island, a small cay at the southern tip of Acklins Island, has a lighthouse, built in 1867, whose light is visible at a distance of about 29 km/18 mi.

Plans were announced in the late 1990s for the construction of a new road, from Lovely Bay at the northern end of the island, where the ferry from Crooked Island comes in, to Salina Bay at its southern tip.
