furlong

Unit of measurement, originating in Anglo-Saxon England, equivalent to 220 yd (201.168 m).

A furlong consists of 40 rods, poles, or perches; 8 furlongs equal one statute mile. Its literal meaning is ‘furrow-long’, and refers to the length of a furrow in the common field characteristic of medieval farming.
