Actinomyces

Small genus of filamentous, Gram-positive, bacteria, formerly classified as fungi (Fungi Imperfecti). Some species are injurious to root crops - for example, Actinomyces scabies is responsible for potato scab - and others can cause the disease actinomycosis in animals and occasionally in humans. Certain species excrete vitamin B12 and have a distinct application in pharmacology.

In 1877, Bollinger and Harz (3) named the genus Actinomyces when they described the etiologic agent of bovine actinomycesis ("lumpy jaw") and called it Actinomyces bovis.
