Acton, John Francis Edward (1736–1811)

English naval officer. In 1779, as minister of the navy, he reorganized the Neapolitan navy. He then became minister of finance, of war, and finally prime minister with almost absolute powers in Naples. In 1798 he fled with the King and Queen of Naples to Palermo on account of the French invasion, but resumed his power on the King's restoration 1799. In 1806 he again fled to Sicily with the royal family.

He was born at Besançon, the son of a British doctor. In 1791 he succeeded to his cousin's title of baronet.
