Dammam

Oil port in Saudi Arabia, on the Gulf coast north of Dhahran; population (1991 est) 350,000. Dammam is the largest city of the eastern region, and has expanded to the city limits of nearby Al Khobar and Dhahran. The port installations are 12 km/7 mi offshore, and are connected to the mainland by a railway causeway. Dammam is the terminus of the railway from Riyadh. There is an important oilfield nearby, and the port has a cement plant.
