Adachi, Hazato

Adachi, Hazato (1890–1947)

Japanese general in World War II. He became commander of the Japanese 18th Army in New Guinea November 1942. Driven out of New Guinea by the Allied advance down the Kokoda Trail, he made a stand in Hollandia where his army was encircled by US and Australian forces. He held out until 13 September 1945, after the war was over, but was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and died shortly afterwards.
