Adak Island

One of the Andrean of Islands in the central Aleutian Islands, southwest Alaska. 50 km/30 mi north–south and 5–32 km/3–20 mi east–west, the mountainous, fogbound island is the site of the Adak Naval Station, established in 1942, after the Japanese attack on the western Aleutians. The antisubmarine patrol base is one of the largest settlements in the islands; population (1990) 4,600. The principal harbour on Adak is Sweeper Cove. The highest point is Mount Moffett; height 1,196 m/3,924 ft.
