Adam, Claus (1917–1983)

US cellist and composer. He studied cello at the Salzburg Mozarteum and with Feuermann in New York, and studied composition with Stefan Wolpe. He was a founding member of the New Music Quartet 1948–55, and was cellist of the Juilliard Quartet until 1974, giving many premieres of American works and music by the Second Viennese School. He was composer-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome in 1976, and the following year his Variations for Orchestra were performed in New York; he wrote a cello concerto for Stephen Kates in 1973.
