Adam, Juliette (1836–1936)

French writer. She wrote stories as well as books on political and social subjects, and founded the Nouvelle revue 1879. Her salon was politically influential.

She was born in Verberie, Oise. Married to a lawyer, La Messine, she published in 1858 under that name a volume of stories and Idées anti-proudhoniennes sur l'amour, la femme et le mariage. After her second marriage in 1868 to Edmond Adam, prefect of police, she wrote largely under her maiden name.

Her works include Le Siège de Paris (1873), Le Roman de mon enfance et de ma jeunesse (1902), Mes Premières Armes littéraires et politiques (1904), Mes Sentiments et nos idées avant 1870 (1905), Mes Illusions et nos souffrances durant le siège de Paris (1906), L'Angleterre en Egypte (1922), and L'Egypte: une leçon diplomatique (1924).
