Adamnan, St

    0.10 sec.

Adamnan, St (or St Adomnan) (c. 625–704)

Irish monk. He was the author of the Life of St Columba. In 679 he was appointed abbot of Iona. While visiting his pupil Aldfrid, King of Northumbria, he was persuaded by the Venerable Bede to accept the Roman observance of Easter and to adopt the regulation tonsure. He endeavoured to introduce the same change of view among his own community, but failed, although some success attended similar efforts in Ireland. Feast day 23 September.
