Adapazari

Capital of Sakarya province, northwest Turkey (Asiatic), on the Sakarya River, 110 km/69 mi east of Istanbul; population (1990) 171,200. It is a major agricultural market centre, with associated woollen textiles-manufacturing, agricultural-engineering, and sugar-refining industries.

The city was seriously damaged by an earthquake in 1967.

Degussa AG, Dusseldorf, Germany, will acquire a majority share (51%) in the Turkish silica joint venture Egesil in Adapazari near Izmit.
Staffers from that office have set up camp in Adapazari, a Turkish city of 200,000 people where at least 3,000 residents died and 7,000 more were injured, he said.
