Adderley, (Julian Edwin) ‘Cannonball’ (1928–1975)

US jazz musician. He was a leading figure and proponent of the bop form of jazz during the 1950s and 1960s. An alto-saxophonist, Adderley was influenced by Charlie Parker. He joined Miles Davis's band in 1957, and played with Davis and John Coltrane on the albums Milestones (1958) and Kind of Blue (1959). Adderley left Davis in 1959, and released a number of successful singles, most notably ‘Mercy Mercy Mercy’ with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1966.
