Adjaria

Autonomous republic in southwestern Georgia, bordering on the Black Sea to the west and on Turkey to the south; area 3,000 sq km/1,160 sq mi; population (1993 est) 400,000. The capital is Batumi. The area is largely mountainous, is on the shore of the Black Sea, and has a humid subtropical climate. The main industries are oil refining and engineering. Agricultural products are tea (Adjaria has been the main producer of tea in Georgia since the 1880s) and citrus fruits; grapes, bamboo, and eucalyptus are also cultivated.
