Admiralty Island National Monument

US national monument. It occupies nearly all of the 4,310-sq km/1,664-sq mi Admiralty Island in the Alexander Archipelago and Tongass National Forest of extreme southeast Alaska. This Tlingit homeland is largely covered by the Kootznahoo (‘bear fortress’) Wilderness. Angoon, to the southwest, is a salmon-canning and trade centre; population (1990) 600. Some mining and logging have been done on the island.
