Adrian

Town and administrative headquarters of Lenawee County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 22,100. It is situated on the Raisin River, 48 km/30 mi northwest of Toledo, Ohio. Adrian is a trading centre for wheat, corn, and livestock; it also manufactures auto and aircraft parts, paper, metals, chemicals, and dairy products. It is home to Adrian College (1859) and Siena Heights College (1919).

Adrian was founded in 1825 by Addison Comstock, who was instrumental in building in 1833 the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad, the first west of New York State. The town has a large historic district, with buildings dating from the 1830s to the post–Civil War period, notably the Croswell Opera House (1866).
