Adrianople, Battle of

Gothic victory over the Roman empire in the East 9 August 378. The battle marked the beginning of the empire's downfall. A Gothic settlement was founded within the frontier of the Roman empire and Valens, the Eastern Emperor, was lost. The success of the Gothic horsemen against the Roman foot soldiers established the superiority of mounted troops in European war for the next thousand years.
