Aegean SeaBranch of the Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey, extending as far south as Crete; the Dardanelles connect it with the Sea of Marmara, in turn linked with the Black Sea via the Bosporus. It is about 600 km/372 mi long and 290 km/180 mi wide, and covers some 214,000 sq km/82,625 sq mi, with a maximum depth of 3,540 m/11,600 ft. Tides are minimal, with a range of only about 40 cm/15 in. The numerous islands in the Aegean Sea include Crete, the Cyclades, the Sporades, and the Dodecanese. As another example, I
noted that the May, 2005, issue of the Elsevier journal
"Tectonophysics" contains papers on the following diverse
geographic areas: Aegean Sea, Japan, Greece, Morocco, Canada, Chile,
Australia, Switzerland, California, France, and Central America (the
12th paper is not region specific). A combat group of the 2nd
Parachute Rifle Regiment, right in the wake of Italy's
capitulation, attacked from the air the Italian High Command
headquarters near Monte Rotondo; subunits of the 7th regiment were
landed by glider in the area of Gran Sasso in order to free Mussolini,
and they also occupied the island of Elba; another combat group staged a
surprise air assault to seize the island of Levros in the Aegean Sea. In the eastern
Mediterranean, for example, it was only because of one FAO's unique
access to Greek and Turkish military leaders that agreements could be
reached to reduce tensions in the Aegean Sea and on Cyprus, which
lowered the potential for conflict between these two NATO allies. |
