aerophone

One of the four main classes of musical instrument used in the original Sachs-Hornbostel system, the others being idiophone, membranophone, and chordophone. In instruments that are aerophones, the air itself is the primary vibrating agent. Subdivisions of aerophones distinguish between a wide range of types of instrument, but the class as a whole accommodates flutes and instruments of the orchestral brass family.
