Ethelfleda (died 918)

English princess, daughter of King Alfred. She was successful in helping her brother Edward to subdue the Danes, and on the death of her husband Ethelred, a high-ranking noble of Mercia 911, she ruled his lands alone, and was called the ‘Lady of the Mercians’. She built fortresses to resist the Danes.
