aetherophone

Electrophonic musical instrument that produces notes from the air. The transitions between the notes produce a sliding wail like that of a siren. It was invented by Lev Theremin of Leningrad in 1924.

The pitch of the note is determined by the position of the player's hand, but skill and judgement are needed to find the notes of the chromatic scale. See also theremin.
