Affre, Denis Auguste

    0.03 sec.

Affre, Denis Auguste (1793-1848)

French cleric, Roman Catholic archbishop of Paris 1840-48, clerical reformer and defender of academic freedom. He tried to mediate between the soldiers and insurgents during the revolutions of 1848. Wearing a green branch to show his peaceful intentions, he mounted a barricade and was killed by a stray bullet.

Affre was born at St Rome-de-Tarn and educated at St Sulpice. He was ordained 1818 and became a Sulpician and teacher of theology 1819. He differed with Louis-Philippe on various matters, especially education; a long polemical debate over secondary education ensued in which Affre defended academic freedom.
