Afonso V (1432-1481)

King of Portugal 1438-81. His father died in 1438 and, after a turbulent regency under his uncle Pedro, Afonso assumed the government in 1448. He conducted a successful campaign in Morocco against the Moors 1458-71. During his reign the Portuguese explored along the west coast of Africa almost as far as the Equator.
