Afro-CaribbeanWest Indian people of African descent. Afro-Caribbeans are the descendants of West Africans captured or obtained in trade from African procurers. European slave traders then shipped them to the West Indies to English, French, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies founded from the 16th century. Since World War II many Afro-Caribbeans have migrated to North America and to Europe, especially to the USA, the UK, and the Netherlands. How to thank TFD for its existence? Maryse Conde, the celebrated author of novels such as Tree of Life,
Segu and Tales From the Heart, uses this tragedy, mixed with brilliant
mysticism, and African Caribbean history, values, and customs to tell
the story of Celanire, a beautiful African woman trying to understand
why, as a baby, she was left to die that way. She continues by
discussing "the challenge facing the African Caribbean writer who
is interested in making English her home" (She Tries Her Tongue 21,
emphasis added). We of African descent--whether we are from Africa itself or of
African American, African Caribbean or Afro-Latino heritage--share the
same goals, and this can't be emphasized enough. |
