The region is culturally heterogeneous with numerous distinctive ethnic and sociolinguistic groups. There are three major language families: Niger-Congo, Hamito-Semitic (Afro-Asiatic), and Chari-Nile (Sudanic). Minor language groups include Khoisan. |
