Afrikaans languageAn official language (with English) of the Republic of South Africa and Namibia. Spoken mainly by the Afrikaners – descendants of Dutch and other 17th-century colonists – it is a variety of the Dutch language, modified by circumstance and the influence of German, French, and other immigrant as well as local languages. This awareness was further heightened during a work study trip to
South Africa where city college students worked in conjunction with
South African students at Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg on a
mock project redeveloping the SOJO (South of Johannesburg) trail. As in India, English is an important secondary language in many
parts of Africa, as are other former colonial languages--French,
Portuguese and Afrikaans, an African variety of Dutch. Kwaito (derived from the Afrikaans word for angry)
uses South African slang known as Isicamtho (a language associated with
township gangs) to create a unique sound that incorporates traditional
African music, jazz, gospel and rock. |
