Agawam

Town in Hampden County, Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 26,700. It lies across the Connecticut River from Springfield, of which it is partly a residential suburb, standing on the Connecticut border. The Westfield (formerly Agawam) River flows along the north of the town to meet the Connecticut. Incorporated in 1855, and formerly an industrial community, Agawam has been a producer of woollen and metal products.

Attractions include the Riverside amusement park, and the former fire station which has been converted to a museum. Agawam was the home town of Anne Sullivan, the teacher of the author and campaigner for the blind, Helen Keller.
