Agee, James

Agee, James (Rufus) (1909–1955)

US journalist, screenwriter, and author. He rose to national prominence as a result of his investigation of the plight of sharecroppers in the South during the Depression. In collaboration with the photographer Walker Evans, he published the photo and text essay ‘Let Us Now Praise Famous Men’ (1941). His screenwriting credits include The African Queen (1951) and The Night of the Hunter (1955). His novel A Death in the Family won a Pulitzer Prize in 1958.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Agee graduated from Harvard 1932 and embarked on a career as a magazine reporter and feature writer.
