Aguadilla

Town and port on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, in the West Indies, 113 km/70 mi west of San Juan; population (2000 est) 16,800. The town lies on Mona Passage, which links the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean, and trades in the produce of its region, including sugar cane, coffee, and tobacco. Local industries include the manufacture of straw hats and cigars. There is some tourism.

Aguadilla is the location for a regional branch of the University of Puerto Rico. Part of the university is Aguadilla Regional College, founded in 1972.

The town was established in 1775, and elevated to the royal rank of ‘villa’ in 1861. Aguadilla is thought to be on the site where Columbus dropped anchor on his second voyage to the American continent in 1493. It is on a wide bay bounded on the south by the hills of Punta Higuero and on the north by Punta Borinquen, the northwest corner of the island. To the east of the town is a limestone karst region.
