Ahaggar

Large plateau region in the central Sahara, about 1,500 km/932 mi south of Algiers. It averages about 900 m/2,953 ft above sea level, its highest point being Mount Tahat (2,918 m/9,573 ft). The plateau is the home of the formerly nomadic Tuareg.

The plateau is mostly a rocky desert with only a few oases, the most important being Tamanrasset. The main north–south route from Algiers to Kano (Nigeria) passes through the region. Natural gas deposits have been found to the northwest of the plateau. High-grade gold deposits were discovered in the 1990s. Exploration for oil took place in the area in 1994.
