Aigues-Mortes

Town in the département of Gard, southern France, on the western end of the Camargue; population (1990) 5,200. Founded in 1240, it was an important port; its founder, Louis IX, twice sailed for the Crusades from here. Its ancient walls remain, and tourism is the mainstay of the economy. The town is now 5 km/3 mi from the Mediterranean coast because of the silting up of the area.

The town's name refers to its many surrounding lagoons and marshes; the mosquito was once prevalent, but has now been eliminated. The town is known for its informal bullfights and cow races.
