Ailey, Alvin

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Ailey, Alvin (1931–1989)

US dancer, choreographer, and director. His Alvin Ailey City Center Dance Theater, formed in 1958, was the first truly multiracial modern dance company. Its emphasis on dance as entertainment, conveyed with an infectious theatricality, brought dance to a wider audience. Ailey's highly individual choreography blends modern, jazz, and classical dance, and celebrates rural and urban black America in pieces like Blues Suite (1958), and the company signature piece Revelations (1960), which has resonances of church revivalist meetings.
