AinuAboriginal people of Japan, driven north in the 4th century AD by ancestors of the Japanese. They now number about 25,000, inhabiting Japanese and Russian territory on Sakhalin, Hokkaido, and the Kuril Islands. Their language has no written form, and is unrelated to any other. The Ainu were recognized by the Japanese government as a minority people in 1991. How to thank TFD for its existence? The development of a local identity during the formation of
Japan's modern nation-state necessitated reflection on
Tsugaru's relationship to the Ainu people. Science
writer and adventurer Jon Turk set out on a 3,000-mile voyage across the
Pacific in an open boat to see if the oldest North American was in fact,
a Jomon--an ancient inhabitant of Japan and related to Polynesians and
the Ainu. Among the Ainu (indigenous people of
the Japanese archipelago), good spirits live on seventeen levels above
the earth, while bad ones inhabit nine or seven levels under the earth
(Stutley: 49, 59). |
