Aix-les-Bains

French spa town in the département of Savoie, near Lake Bourget, 13 km/8 mi north of Chambéry; population (1990) 24,800, conurbation 35,400. The warm sulphur and alkaline springs have attracted visitors since Roman times, and are still popular. The Romans called the town Aquae Gratianae, and parts of some Roman buildings remain.
