Ajanta Caves

Buddhist sanctuaries (chaityas) and monasteries (viharas) cut into a granite cliff in the Wagurna River valley, 8 km/5 mi from the village of Ajanta in Maharashtra state, west-central India. The 28 caves, which were excavated between 200 BC and 700 AD, contain magnificent sculptures and murals depicting the life of Buddha.
